HD Sentinel -- HDD Internal Database - Question

Post by full_stop »

Hi,

Quick question please.

I am using HD Sentinel v5.30 Standard with an IcyBox external raid enclosure IB-RD3620SU3

I have 2 Seagate HDDs in the IcyBox, ST2000nm000b

The drives are correctly detected by HD Sentinel but under the Information tab --> Disk Information, it is showing 'Information not yet available' for each / both of these drives

As per screenshot below

I understand, from reading other posts on this forum, that the HDD database within HD Sentinel needs to contain the specific information for my drives in order to display it in that section and that each subsequent version releases of HD Sentinel adds more HD drives to the database.

I was wondering if you could let me know whether this is a drive, Seagate ST2000NM000b, that you have added to HD Sentinel's internal database since v5.30.

No point in me wasting time to upgrade to a newer / latest version of HD Sentinel if the internal database in these versions also does not contain this drive information, since v5.30 works fine...

For you guide, I have another IcyBox external raid enclosure, also an IB-RD3620SU3 containing 1x Seagate ST1000nm0011 and 1x Seagate ST1000nm0033 and the Disk / ATA information on those is fully available and populated in HD Sentinel, so it is not the raid chipset on the IcyBox which is the issue (unless it was changed as I bought the 2nd IcyBox enclosure recently)

Many thanks for any info provided and great product. I do not regret one bit having purchased 2 licenses!

Hi,

Generally 5.30 version is VERY old. I'd really recommend to update to latest version, as the old version may have limited functionality, features, hardware support in general and yes, as you can see, it may provide less details in any ways (for example on the Information page) because it may not able to detect/report as much details as the new version.

if you prefer, you can keep version 5.30, but it would be better to update to latest version.

I double checked, sorry, but no, currently the ST2000NM000B model is not yet available in the database of the latest version too.
(only ST2000NM000A available if I can say about similar model family). ST2000NM000B model will be added in a later database.
However, it does not affect the status detection and reporting of the Health / temperature and other details, "just" the physical characteristics is missing from the bottom of the Information page.

It depends on lots of factors in addition to the version of the software (as different software versions may able to provide different kind of information), the firmware difference (even if the RAID enclosure model is the same) and even RAID configuration can affect the level of detail displayed.
The latest version would probably display more details (and even more functions) for both IcyBox RAID boxes and drives in general.

If you prefer, you can use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option, so I can check the level of detail - but probably this will not work by the very old version due to server changes/upgrades since release of the very old version 5.30, so I'd recommend to try in the latest version.

If you have licensed version, then the update is completely free: your license grants lifetime use and free updates to all future versions, so you can any time update or install the latest version.

Thanks for the info about the ST2000NM000b. Yes I am aware from reading some of your previous posts on this forum that other features as you described above are unaffected.

Let me please ask you one final question.

Can HD Sentinel Pro do the Short Self Test and the Read Test on individual drives in a Raid1 array ie on each HDD separately.

Many thanks for your help

> Can HD Sentinel Pro do the Short Self Test

It depends on the actual situation, most important the RAID controller itself.
With many RAID controllers yes: Hard Disk Sentinel can send the self-test command to the disk drive, so then it is possible to use Disk menu -> Short self test / Extended self test on a single drive of the RAID array. This also depends on the software version too: the use of this function may not possible with older version.

Of course NOT. The purpose of the RAID array is exactly to avoid reading/testing ONE drive of the array.
While the internal hardware self tests may be possible, the Disk menu -> Surface test functions are possible only on the complete array.

This is good, as this way ideally we can test the drive(s) by the hardware self test independently - and also we can test the whole array, which includes testing of both the drives and the RAID controller (plus possible other devices related eg. cables/connections/backplane and so).
