I'm close to running out of SATA ports on my Mobo + and an IBM M1015 cross flashed using the "IT Firmware" as LSI 9211-8i. Any suggestions for a cost effective 16 port card that just presents as a bunch of SATA ports (no need for RAID)? Needs to run under Windows 8.1

To be honest, as I checked, 16 port cards are really expensive....

Personally I'd recommend similar LSI chipset - just with 16 ports, for example 9201-16i may be between $400-$500

If you'd have an other free PCI express x8 (or x16) port on your motherboard, the most economic solution would be adding an other same 9211-8i card.

If you check other manufacturers and you do not use RAID, avoid Adaptec non-RAID HBA cards. While Adaptec RAID-type cards work great and complete hard disk status can be detected and monitored by Hard Disk Sentinel - this is not true for their non-RAID cards (HBAs).

FYI - I've just decided to slowly upgrade my HDD to the 6TB Seagates now they are around $300.

jmone, your decision of slowly upgrading HDD is nice as 16 port card price starts from 350$ and it is quite expensive. If you need to enquirer more on 16 Port Sata Card you can contact to professional computer hardware installers of your area.
