3-4 days at 52%

Post by scifi »

Hi, I've a 3TB Seagate external USB HDD that shows 9% health. HDS is performing a reinitialize disk surface and has spent 2 days at 52%. "Error 55 The specified network resource or device is no longer available." So far there are 25 bad (red) sectors. Is the HD toast or should I let it play out?

Yes, when the hard disk tries to repair the appropriate sector(s), it is possible that it is not responding for a longer time.
Then the operating system may disconnect it - removing from the system completely.
In such situations, the test may be stopped and then (after disconnecting/reconnecting the hard disk) it can be started again, to force the hard disk to fix the problematic area.
Then it is good idea to use Disk menu -> Surface test -> Reinitiialse disk surface test, but before starting the test, in this new test-configuration window, select the Configuration tab and use the "Limit testing to specific data blocks" option to configure first/last blocks to test, to prevent testing the previous 52% again.

So you may configure (for example) to start at block 5200 (or maybe a bit lower position, eg. 5100 to make sure that all sectors should be tested and reapired with the Reinitiialse disk surface test) to continue the testing.

Ideally if you'll have the complete surface tested and repaired, then the drive may run better and can be used (because of its health, maybe only for secondary storage). But if the hard disk drive will again report this or similar error (especially if it happens many times after repeating the test) then I'd not recommend to store any kind of important data on it.

I'll give it a try, thanks. It's been 5 days and it's crawling.
