Just upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro and I now get a warning on load that HDS 4.40 is already loaded.
...it appears as though it wants to start twice

This sounds interesting. Did you previously have Win7 with Hard Disk Sentinel and then upgraded to Win8?
In general, it should register itself to start only once.
But then it's possible that entries of the previous Windows system remain active - and additionally a new entry for Win8 created.
What happens if you try to disable Configuration -> Preferences -> Load with Windows option?
Then Hard Disk Sentinel will remove the system entries to start up automatically, so then it may not start at all (then you can re-enable the setting) or start in one instance properly.
