Yes, as you can see it is related to the driver.
These tests are standard hardware tests and the software tries to use this function of the hard disk.
But in some cases the disk controller driver may block this command as some incomplete drivers do not recognise this command and returns
"invalid function"
The same may happen if you want to modify acoustic level of the drive (if supported).
The issue is more common under Vista, Win7 and especially 64 bit OSes because driver manufacturers usually do not want to take care of all disk related functions - just the basic ones.
