Home Server (Ent) License?

Hi,

Lately I've been playing around with Hyper-V .. the "Free" virtualization solution from Microsoft.
And I'm loving it and been virtualizing well just about everything . <g>

Now I have a few Linux and a WinXP VM running on my test box.
But it's not possible to monitor SMART from within the VM's

Now either you would have to figure out how/why the MS drivers are blocking the SMART bit maybe they are crippled?
Or you run a smart agent on the Host and read it via Enterprise version.
Maybe the Pro version could be extended to allow one remote agent?

Hi,

You could point on the biggest problem with virtualization: it completely hides the underlying hardware from the software.
In theory software running in such virtual environments should not access the "outside" world (including hard disk SMART information).
This may be a limitation - or a feature if we see from different viewpoints ;)

Yes, the best way to override it to install any version (standard or PRO) of Hard Disk Sentinel directly to the computer running the virtual environment and by using the "webstatus" function (registered versions, Configuration -> Integration page) you can verify information from inside the virtual environment by using a simple web browser - so this does not require the Enterprise Server.

This report is customizable, shows not only hard disk specific information but system details so administrators can check CPU, RAM, virtual memory usage, uptime, last boot time, etc. For security purposes it can be protected by password to prevent unauthorized access.

Below you can find some screens and you can check the complete report for all details at

No problems, the docs may cover everything but can be long to read the whole, especially if you are interested only in a simple function ;)

I've been lazy for quite some time which made me try new things to make everything simpler.
