Service not starting

A few months ago, I have installed Hard Disk Sentinel 2.81 as a service on a Samsung NV20 laptop (Intel Celeron @ 1,70 GHz with 512 MB of RAM) running MS Windows XP SP3 French. The lack of ressources is greatly compensated by the use of US software Process Lasso.

Regurlarly I am experiencing failures with the service mode. The error message is:
"Le service HardDiskSentinelService n'a pas pu démarrer à cause de l'erreur suivante :
Le service n'a pas répondu assez vite à la demande de lancement ou de contrôle."
which is in English:
"The Service HardDiskSentinelService failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
In order to make the service start again at boot, I usually re-install it by running the program, then clicking on "Service Mode" in the "integration" menu in "configuration". This is kind of annoying, as I have to reset this regurlarly. But today this workaround is not working any more. :|

So I have set the service startup as "manual" (instead of "automatic"), and I am now starting it with the command net start HardDiskSentinelService. I am delaying this startup with Australian software Startup Delayer.

I have checked the following pages on MS KB, but none seems to apply:

Do you think that this might be a fixable bug?

This issue can be caused by some different issues.
As I read, previously you had no troubles when you start the service but now it does not start even in automatic or manual mode.
So the important is the verify the recent changes happened in the hardware or software environment?

If possible, please check if the issue is caused by any hardware device, for example removable USB drive(s), card reader(s), pendrive(s) or so. I recommend to try if such devices are disconnected.

Also you may try to clear all statistics and reset to default configuration settings by removing the following files from the folder of Hard Disk Sentinel (C:\Program Files\Hard Disk Sentinel by default):
- HDSentinel.ini
- HDSentinel.sta
- DISKDATA*.*

If the problem is still not fixed after removing these all, please send me a test report with the software. This way I can examine your configuration and check what can cause the issue.

To send a test report, please first click on the "Stop service" shortcut in the Hard Disk Sentinel program group. This will uninstall the service and start Hard Disk Sentinel in application mode. Then the "Report" menu "Send test report to developer" option can be used to create and send a test report - so I can examine the situation.

G'day -

I've got much the same problem as CyberAlex.

I installed v2.90 on a machine running a new clean full install of Windows 2000 Pro SP4 rollup 1.

However, HDS first ran properly both as an application and as a service. Then I noticed it had trouble running on the user account as a service, and now the service won't start. Ummmm... let me clarify: if I log off the Administrator account and then log on to the user account, HDS will run as a service, and vice-versa. Only if I Restart the computer, the service won't run.

I must confess I was installing maintenance software at the time the HDS startup degraded, but since the effect was not immediately noticed (unlike W9x, one doesn't have to reboot after each install) I cannot say which install may be at fault: I would have to uninstall maybe a dozen applications, and reset hardware settings.

The machine has the following hardware: Intel D845GEBV2, 2.4GHz P4, 512MB RAM, WDC WB800JB-00CRA1, WDC WB800BB-22JHC0, Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Digital, ASUS OEM NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X. I have disabled the Intel display and multimedia devices. The ASUS NVIDIA did not come with the Asus CD-ROM -- I sourced the CD from another machine which was being scrapped.

The original fault showed up as paired System log entries:

The open procedure for service "PerfDisk" in DLL "C:\WINNT\system32\perfdisk.dll" has taken longer than the established wait time to complete. There may be a problem with this extensible counter or the service it is collecting data from or the system may have been very busy when this call was attempted.


I was able to remove the perflib entries by extending the timeout to 40,000ms (this is rough! :shock: ), but the HDS service still won't run: it shows in the Services log as "Automatic", but the "Started" column is blank - it does NOT say "Stopped". If I want the service to run, I must manually start it, either by using the HDS Start Menu entries or by using the Administrative Tools>Services dialog.

I have included a Report made immediately after rebooting. Alas, I am unable at the moment to attach the machine to the internet.

Hi Gordon,

It seems the performance library did not initialised and this blocks Hard Disk Sentinel service from starting.
Please try the following:

1) Start -> Run -> Regedit
2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HD Sentinel key
3) create a new STRING (REG_SZ) with name "DetectPerf" and set value to "0"
4) restart the computer

This tweak disables performance monitoring in Hard Disk Sentinel, so if we are correct, the service should start.
