GPT/MBR 3TB?

Post by vairox »

You may remember my post below about the 3TB Seagate GoFlex reporting higher and higher bad sectors. I went and bought a Seagate Backup Plus (replaces the goflex line, but exact same drive inside) and for some reason I cannot format it to an MBR disk with the entire 3TB like the GoFlex is formatted. I know MBR cannot support drives over 2TB but Hard Disk Sentinel is reporting the GoFlex as an MBR disk of 3TB (the bad drive) I'm wondering if that is the reason it's coming up with bad sectors because it's formatted in a way that isn't even supposed to be possible? the Backup Plus is one entire GPT Basic partition, if I make it MBR it cuts the drive into 2 parts, as GPT it's one but the GoFlex is one entire MBR NTFS 3TB drive partition and I don't understand that so maybe that has something to do with the bad sectors, which have now gone up to 592.

Thanks for your message and images.

It is really interesting that the GoFlex originally had 3 TB MBR style partition, but I do not really think this would cause the bad sectors.
If there would be any troubles (for example caused by mis-addressing) then Disk menu -> Surface test functions could not test the whole hard disk surface, but as I remember, you wrote that you used these tests to verify the drive.

Anyway, if you can use Report -> Send test report to developer option, it may help to check the actual status (especially interesting as the status changes, new problems reported).
