doubt health hdd x long test

Post by cloudff7 »

If crystal disk info or seatools or Hard disk sentinel says that the hdd health is good is there still a need for a full and deep scan?

While you can check the current status/attributes in many tools, this is absolutely NOT enough: we'd need a way to properly interpret the results (eg. by a text description) and check possible changes / degradations with time.

In addition yes, of course, complete scan is always required. Important to know that the S.M.A.R.T. attributes reflect only possible problems already "discovered" by the drive. But without PROPER testing, problems may remain undetected for long time, sometimes even for months / years (!) until the drive starts to read/write the appropriate sector. This explained at

www.hdsentinel.com -> Support -> Knowledge Base -> Hard Disk Cases -> Bad Sectors
https://www.hdsentinel.com/hard_disk_case_bad_sectors.php

and this is why a complete testing is always recommended even on a new drive: to reveal (and fix/stabilize) any possible errors - or confirm that the drive is really working without problems. If problems revealed - it is better to ask for warranty replacement at the start of the lifetime, before the drive would be filled with lots of data.

Please check Support -> Frequently Asked Questions -> Hard disk health is low or recently changed or I just installed a new (used) hard disk. How can I perform a deep analysis?
https://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests

for the different type of tests: the combination of these tests required in order to surely confirm the situation: to verify that
- all components are working correctly
- all sectors could be read AND written without errors
- there are no delays, retries etc.

Other solutions to check/test may be not sensitive enough as they may not report possible performance decrease, retries, slower areas, status changes/degradation and/or may test only part of the drive.

What is the name of the full scan to determine if the HDD is good or bad? What is the name of this scan?

Is it the surface scan?

Does only the HD Sentinel have this scan?

It mentions many tests and I am confused, I would like to perform only 1 full test

I use new no files 2.5" HDD + aluminum case USB 3.0

The best is exactly to use multiple tests because they check / verify everything.

If we need to name only one test, then I suggest to use Disk menu -> Surface test -> Read test in Hard Disk Sentinel (available only in the registered, complete version) to
- verify that ALL sectors are readable,
- reveal problems (if any)
- or confirm that the drive is usable: there are no delays, retries, slower areas or unreadable sectors.

I would like to use only one test to avoid further wear on the HDD in multiple tests

I still don't have the registered version. Is only the Sentinel surface test good? Does it not work with other software?
