If I am running the Extended Self-test and click on the Background button, is there a way to restore the window so that I can see its progress (how much time is remaining)?
I tried choosing the Extended Self-test again, and it looks like it simply started a new test (and I'm not even sure if it also stopped the previous one).
Also, I assume that quitting HD Sentinel will stop the Extended Self-test?
How Do I Redisplay a "Backgrounded" Self Test?

Re: How Do I Redisplay a "Backgrounded" Self Test?
If the short / extended self test is running and you send that window to the background, then you may notice that the Hard Disk Test button in the button bar of the main window (7th from left) is "flashing": a "play" symbol displayed over the default button (the hard disk drive + magnifier symbol) when the appropriate disk drive selected.
Just click on that button to display the self test progress window again.

No: the short / extended self test runs "inside" the disk drive after once started.
So a started test will run even if you quit (completely close) Hard Disk Sentinel.
In contrast, if you use the CANCEL button in the self test progress window, then Hard Disk Sentinel will send "stop" command to the drive, so then it will be stopped.
