Question about hd health

Post by Venomus »

So recently I got an error in my event viewer "The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block." Health dropped to 86% and it said that it found 9 bad sectors on HDsentinel. I ran chkdsk and here are the results

After reboot and again in windows, HDsentinel now shows 63% and says that there are 25 bad sectors. Am I missing something?

Yes, you missed something:

https://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests

https://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#health

When Hard Disk Sentinel displayed the errors first, it is recommended to perform the PROPER way to diagnose, test, reveal and fix issues.
If you read those pages, chkdsk never mentioned, as chkdsk *never* recommended in such cases: chkdsk (even if sounds surprising) never fixes problems with the hard disk, but attempts to fix problems with the logical drive / partition only. This is wrong approach, described with details on https://www.hdsentinel.com/hard_disk_ca ... ectors.php

(Data recovery companies never recommend chkdsk on a problematic hard disk).

So when you see errors in Hard Disk Sentinel, then you'd need to perform tests by the proper ways, exactly to reveal possible issues, fix them (if possible) and attempt to stabilize the hard disk status. If this happened, so the physical hard disk status is fixed, stabilized, then you may use chkdsk just to verify the logical drive/partition status (if required).
