APM

Post by Ext1234 »

Не могу понять почему не работает управление питанием (APM). На трех моих дисках когда я меняю данные APM, они не сохраняются.

Advanced Power Management function (if supported) should control the disk drive internal power management function, which works independently from the hard disk sleep timeout and other settings in Windows. This allows hard disks to enter to sleep (standby) mode or just park heads (move outside from the data area) frequently to "save power". However, this has some negative effects (increasing load/unload count, power cycles and so).

Generally many hard disks have this function: if not greyed out in the Disk menu (so can be selected) then the hard disk supports this feature so we can adjust how the disk drive should work:

- save as much power as possible (leftmost setting of the slider)
- work without power save, without parking / unloading / entering to standby (rightmost setting of the slider)
- or by a balanced power mode.

Most hard disks do NOT support the latest (balanced) options, just the leftmost or the rightmost settings, setting to other level may result that the value is not changing or jumps to a different result.

In some cases, disk controller (motherboard chipset) and/or its driver may block the command: even if supported by the disk drive, the level can't be changed due to the limitation of the controller. In this case, trying with a different connection (or with USB adapter/docking station) the level may be configured.

This function (and an other in Hard Disk Sentinel at Configuration -> Disk control) can be used to prevent increasing of unload cycles and start/stop count.
