Driver version: Intel RST 15.7.0.1014 (latest as of this writing)
HDS version: 5.01 (8557)/5.01.5 (8557)

I recently updated my Intel RST drivers, and since then, HDS can no longer read SMART info from my drives. I have tried the current stable version 5.01 and the beta 5.01.5 but neither works. HDS does see all the drives detected to my computer and their capacities, it just can't read SMART from them. Other utilities that read SMART data work fine.

Please let me know what info you require from me to help troubleshoot this.

Yesterday I just tried to update to 15.7 on Intel Z77 chipset and I can confirm everything is fine. As you can see on the image,



both the standalone hard disk (disk #0), two hard disks in RAID (disk 1+2) and two NVMe (M.2) SSDs (disk 3+4) show up completely correctly with complete status information in the latest 5.01.5 version (with 5.01, the NVMe SSDs in RAID did not yet displayed).

I wonder what modification Intel did which does not allow detection on your system.

Generally other tools may attempt to use different (easier) methods, for example does not perform detection of complete disk configuration (logical volumes, arrays and their devices) - this can cause the difference.

Personally I see no improvements in Intel 15.7 drivers, so I'd recommend to revert back to 15.2 which was better, no errors/problems reported by any user with it, even in standalone or RAID mode (with SATA and NVMe drives too).

Anyway, yes, would be nice to diagnose, check what happened and improve the situation.

Please try the following:

1) completely close Hard Disk Sentinel by File -> Exit.

2) Then you'd need to start HDSentinel.exe with some command line parameters, to create text files to save the communication between the drives / devices and Hard Disk Sentinel itself. For this, please open an elevated command prompt by starting CMD.EXE and select "Run as administrator".

3) Then navigate to the folder of the software by entering

CD "C:\Program Files (x86)\Hard Disk Sentinel"

(if it's installed in that folder) and then enter

HDSentinel.exe /ENABLETEST /REPORT /RAID

This should create some text files: a testmode.txt, RAID.TXT and a
HDSentinel_5.01.5_PRO_report.txt into the folder of Hard Disk Sentinel.


Please send these files to info (at) hdsentinel (dot) com (maybe compressed or as-is) as then I can examine the whole detection, investigate the response. This may give ideas about what happens - and hopefully things can be improved.

Sorry for bumping this REALLY OLD post but I finally figured out what the issue was: the "Disable detection of USB and SCSI drives" setting somehow got enabled. I don't remember checking it, but I must have while playing around in the settings.

Anyhow, when I ran the latest version and saw the info saying "try disable that setting" and did it, everything started working again. I almost feel like there should be a dialog box that pops up when you enable that setting that warns you that it could break drive detection.

Thanks for the tip about the confirmation dialog, yes, may be added in a later version. Generally that option is not really required (I can't name any real situation in the past 5 year when it was required) only kept for compatibility purposes, for some very old systems and devices, for example very old memory card readers and WinNT/Win2000 systems. In some rare situations there the USB and SCSI detection was slow and this option may helped.

Yes, the updated version displays the notification in the text description exactly for this purpose: to help us to remember if an option selected can cause troubles

Generally the updated version has lots of improvements for Intel RAID detection too, so if you have the opportunity, you can use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option, just to confirm things and verify if there are still room for improvements, further optimizations.
