hard disk not monitored

Post by Blazer »

Good morning everyone !

hopefully just a newbe configuration error with a registered hd sen v440 [6431], sometime after @ 6 hours sentinel looses communication with a drive bender pool of 3 wd 2tb red hard drives, the drives are selected to be monitored [ not the pool ] and show icons in the tray, they are connected to an LSI sas2 2008 falcon in a pci-e slot and is read correctly by hd sen till sometime after 6 hrs, the pc has a power mode of always on [ no sleep or standby ] and only the monitor is allowed to turn off after 15 minutes, if I exit and restart hd sen prog everything is groovy again, user error in settings ?

Hi Blazer,

Sounds interesting. I do not think it is an user or setting, it seems like a driver issue or similar which (after some time) may provide information which causes confusion.

The best would be to use
1) Report menu -> Send test report to developer option after startup, when everything is fine
2) Report menu -> Send test report to developer option after you see the problem, when partial information is displayed (without restart)

This would help to check the response from the controller and verify what can be wrong.

Even if the hard disks should not spin down because of the Windows power management settings, some controllers may use their own power management function which can activate.

You may try to use Configuration -> Disk Control -> Do not allow spin down of disks option, just speciy a * to that field. This way Hard Disk Sentinel periodically sends a command, causing the that the drives should (really) keep spinning and the controller should maintain the connection. This may help, but the above mentioned reports would be nice to investigate the actual situation.

Excuse me for that - this can be a temporary network problem. Please try again after some time
(in the meantime, I received and checked, in that report I see everything is working correctly).

Alternatively, you can use Configuration -> Send test report page, where it is possible to create and send the developer "test" report, save to TXT file and you can send in e-mail to info@hdsentinel.com address.

Please note that it is completely different from the report created by Report -> Save text report, which is an user-level report. The developer "test" report contains error codes, driver details and raw information provided by the disk controller and OS, which always helps checking what can be wrong.

" send test report to developer" Report has been sent from hd sentinel prog, will wait for response, 2 reports sent, 1 from loss of communication and 1 after reboot and all showing up.

Thanks for the reports!

Yes, as I see in the 2nd report, somehow the LSI RAID controller does not respond, does not provide any details, just like if it would be not connected at all.

Do you need a _complete_ reboot to have things working again? Or is it enough if you
- use File -> Exit to completely close Hard Disk Sentinel and restart it
or
- click on the leftmost button in the main window just under File (the two blue arrows forming a circle) which should force the detection of complete status again?

Do you have the latest possible firmware and drivers installed for the LSI controller? Just to be sure.

started the comp this morning @ 7:00 am and all drives showing up, checked status @ 12:30 pm and all three wd red are not seen by hd sen, click on refresh and they are then seen but not reporting, click again
and still not reporting, click again and " Update Disk Information " box pops up and states " Do you want to wake up all sleeping hard disks also ? Otherwise only information of active disks will be updated " choose yes and still not reporting, so chose a file @ 10 gb from another drive and copied to the pool and they woke up, so apparently the wd reds are ignoring my power settings and sleeping on the job, so its a wd red problem.

and yes if I reboot everything is reported, all lattest drivers and firmware.

Thanks for the info and the details !

Sounds interesting - but yes, it's possible that there is a such incompatibility between the controller and the WD REDs.

Thanks for the info, I expected that the refresh button should be enough - but it seems the controller does not respond even after that.

So it would be important is to know: if you completely close (by File -> Exit) and then start Hard Disk Sentinel again (but without the reboot), do you get all information again?
Or a reboot must be done to make the RAID controller working again?

Thanks!

ill chk those for you in the coming days.

after yesterdays post I uninstalled the lsi card driver from device manager under storage controllers, reset the power options, rebooted, its been up since and all reporting, so apparently some settings were not correct, will monitor today and report latter.

Thanks! I'll wait for the news and hopefully things will be fine now.
If possible, please use Report -> Send test report to developer option, as then it's possible to check any difference(s) compared with the previous status.

I do remember that if I exit sen and then restart sen the drives woke up apparently and all was good.

as it is right now everything is being monitored and all shows up, so no other problems with drives falling out of task bar monitor.
