Noisy HD and Hard Disk Sentinel report

Post by Ryo94 »

Hi,

I just bought an used 8TB Seagate Exos HD and I although seems to works fine what caught my attention is that on startup it makes very weird sounds, this is the first time I bought a seagate hd and also the first time I bought used storage, with smaller (2TB) WD hd's never heard such weird sounds. It's normal?

I tested the disk with Seatools and it passed the short and long test. Also checked it HD Sentinel and seems to be Ok too but I don't understand to much of the parameters listed in the results.

Re: Noisy HD and Hard Disk Sentinel report

Post by hdsentinel »

Please check the Support -> Frequently Asked Questions page:

Hard disk health is low or recently changed or I just installed a new (used) hard disk. How can I perform a deep analysis?

https://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests

Testing is generally a good idea - but what you wrote is only a part of the proper testing.
To reveal any possible issue - or confirm that the drive is really working correctly, it is recommended to perform multiple test functions:

To summarize, the following steps are the best to detect and repair hard disk problems:
1) Disk -> Short self test
2) Disk -> Extended self test
3) Disk -> Surface test -> Read test
4) Disk -> Surface test -> Reinitialize disk surface

You do not need to check the numbers one by one, Hard Disk Sentinel designed exactly to help in this case, to interpret the numbers and (based on them) show the most important values for the hard disk drive:

Health . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : #################### 100 % (Excellent)
Performance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : #################### 100 % (Excellent)

This is the most important.

You see communication errors in the text description and the suggested link explains that with more details: probably a wrong data cable caused that.

Re: Noisy HD and Hard Disk Sentinel report

First thank you very much for answer and for clarifying the situation. So those high values in the "Command Timeout" parameter are not to be worried about?, the disk came with those numbers and didn't change since then, I've been testing the disk for about 15 days with common tasks but tomorrow I'll run the 4 test that you mentioned.
