SSD health is lower (5%) but work very well

My SSD suddenly stopped working yesterday while I was using it. This is probably due to a SATA cable error or a circuit short. After a few moments, my PC restarted automatically (just as with a blue screen error). However, the BIOS stopped detecting the SSD afterward.

Then I cleaned the PC, cleared any dust that might cause a short circuit, and plugged in the SSD again. The BIOS started to detect the drive, and the PC started booting up. However, some system files were corrupted and windows ended up with a black screen after the logo screen. Then I formatted the drive, reinstalled Windows and booted the PC again. After OS reinstallation, it started working perfectly well.

After OS reinstallation, I installed hard disk sentinel and checked the SSD status. The health is now at 5%, and it used to be 100% before this incident. However, I can't notice any sign of a performance drop or any sign of further data corruption. The SSD works perfectly well, just as it used to.

I used multiple programs to test whether there are bad sectors. There are no bad sectors in its current condition.

Could it be that the bad sectors in SSDs aren't as alarming as the bad sectors in HDDs? In my experience, an HDD with this many bad sectors would likely be in very bad condition, causing consistent disk errors and data corruption with noticably poor performance. This doesn't seem to be the case with this SSD.

There is a warranty remaining for this SSD. Should i claim warranty over this, or would it be fine to keep using this SSD under these conditions? Claiming the warranty would also involve reinstalling the OS again and configuing other software from scratch, on top of other hassles. I would like to avoid that process if it isn't necessary.

There was no noticable performance drop in practical day to day usage. However, i ran a disk benchmark and figured out that the sequential write speed has dropped from 453MB/s to 197MB/s. I think it would be better to claim warranty over this with the speed drop. Read speed has dropped as well but by a relatively small margin (551MB/s to 452MB/s).

Yes, I'm afraid I can confirm SSDs can have bad sectors as well, exactly as hard disks: when a problem found, the SSD automatically writes the data again to a spare sector and re-directs all further reads and writes to that sector.

This is exactly what hard disks do - just on SSDs the whole process is much quicker and there are no noticeable signs, for example no "clicking" or other weird noises, no retries / substantial delays and so.

Manufacturers prepared for this and (even if it is bad for us) they allow bad sectors. For more information, please check:

Ideally yes, we should never notice problems: the original bad sectors no longer used (instead the spare sectors read/written), so until that spare area is full, the drive should operate correctly.
In best case, the performance can drop (as you can see) but in worst case as new and new bad sectors appear, data corruption / data loss may occur.

In real life usually SSDs with so low Health % produce lots of problems: freezes, unreadable files/folders, damaged/corrupted data, unbootable system and so as more and more sectors fail. If you did not encounter any of these ("just" the slowness) you're really lucky.

Yes, I'd definitely ask for warranty replacement (after a backup and a complete erase eg. by Disk menu -> Surface test -> Write test or Reinitialise Disk Surface when the SSD connected as secondary drive via USB dock/enclosure).

Maybe if possible, I'd ask to please use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option. Checking the status of such problematic / failing SSDs (or hard disks) always help further development, how to detect/report errors/issues specifically for a model.
