Sentinel logging changes in SMART values when there aren't

Post by Gerlauve »

This started happening when I did a bunch of things with my Windows and hard drive. I wrote the details about the whole thing on another forum https://www.sysnative.com/forums/thread ... ost-310289.

I thought HD Sentinel was broken so I reinstalled it but it still logs changes when run SeaTools and perform some tests including a basic SMART check and it also records some changes during bootup.

This is all the records of the logs right now.
12/8/2020 7:48:57 PM,#199 Ultra ATA CRC Error Count 0 -> 21700
12/8/2020 7:48:57 PM,#198 Off-Line Uncorrectable Sector Count 0 -> 2147
12/8/2020 7:48:57 PM,#197 Current Pending Sector Count 0 -> 60313
12/8/2020 7:48:55 PM,#184 End-to-End Error Count 0 -> 136
12/8/2020 7:08:05 PM,#197 Current Pending Sector Count 0 -> 42
12/8/2020 7:08:04 PM,#196 Reallocation Event Count 0 -> 21691

This appeared after I ran a SMART check using SeaTools
12/8/2020 7:08:05 PM,#197 Current Pending Sector Count 0 -> 42
12/8/2020 7:08:04 PM,#196 Reallocation Event Count 0 -> 21691

This appeared when I turned off my laptop then turned it on again.
12/8/2020 7:48:57 PM,#199 Ultra ATA CRC Error Count 0 -> 21700
12/8/2020 7:48:57 PM,#198 Off-Line Uncorrectable Sector Count 0 -> 2147
12/8/2020 7:48:57 PM,#197 Current Pending Sector Count 0 -> 60313
12/8/2020 7:48:55 PM,#184 End-to-End Error Count 0 -> 136

All the SMART values are healthy and Sentinel is saying it has 100% health. Is my drive failing?

These values seem to be very "random".
Not sure if it is caused by the disk drive itself, but it may be related to a bad driver installed for the disk controller (motherboard chipset) which can sometimes provide false information. Personally found once with a very old chipset driver and things fixed after the driver update.

I'd recommend to check if there is an updated chipset driver available - as things may be better, hopefully then there will be no further changes recorded.

If you use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option, I can check the actual situation: the disk drive itself, the disk controller and its driver and this may give thoughts about what can be better.

Please note that there is no need to use other tools for testing: the Disk menu -> Short self test, Extended self tests in Hard Disk Sentinel performs exactly the manufacturer-specific tests (available in that tool) and there are even better, more sophisticated tests available (for example the surface scan: Disk menu -> Surface test -> Read test) focusing on revealing any kind of problems (possible slowness, retries, etc.) which are usually ignored by other tools. Plus we did not mention the repair functions ;)

Please check these pages for more information in general about tests:

Oh yeah a bad driver makes sense since I did a Refresh. I'll look into it. Also, I already sent a test report yesterday. The sender name is Gerlauve.

I never tested since I refreshed Windows but copying files from one partition to another is so slow. I tried copying from my laptop to an external drive but the speed was fine. I thought it was because of the antivirus so I uninstalled it but copying still averages at 10 mb/s or lower.

Generally if the source and target hard disk drive is the same (even if you copy from one partition to another) can be very slow as the disk drive needs to perform multiple seek operations. Things can be especially worse if you may copy smaller files and/or the file system (partition) is fragmented.
Yes, antivirus software can also slow down file operations a bit - but it can be slow without it.

Yes, if you'd copy to a different hard disk (for example the external drive), things may be faster.

I double checked, but somehow I do not see the report you mentioned. Not sure what happened, but if possible, please use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option again in Hard Disk Sentinel: if arrives, it may give some thoughts.
