Possible drive going bad??

Post by Grinch843 »

Hi, I've got a few drives that are showing up in HD Sentinel pro with the "Raw Read Error Rate" graph looking like the following screenshot, is this an indication that there are problems with the drives? I've got other drives that all show 0's so not sure what to make of it...

Thanks,

Not sure, but I suspect the drive is in question is a Seagate hard disk.

By checking the raw value changes and the very high values for "Raw read error rate" S.M.A.R.T. attribute we may feel that there are hundreds of thousands (or even millions) of "errors".

I can confirm that this is not true, this high value does not mean the number of errors. This is why it is called "error rate" (instead of error count).

This is why (if I'm correct, I only see partial status) Hard Disk Sentinel shows 100% health and replacement is not required.

Of course I can confirm that if there would be a real error, Hard Disk Sentinel would surely
- report in the text description
- show the degradation health value
- it would be detected by Disk -> Short self test or Disk -> Extended self test
- the Disk -> Surface test -> Read test could not be completed without problems

If you are interested in further information about this, please check this forum topic:
viewtopic.php?f=32&t=735&p=973#p973
which describes this situation and attribute.

(note that for Seagate drives, the "seek error rate" attribute is working similarly, it can reach even millions in normal operation, exactly as you can see.
This is described in the Help also).

Comparing these values with an other drive is not a good idea. Different manufacturers use S.M.A.R.T. attributes differently, so they may reflect status, statististical information and errors differently - and it is important to interpret them correctly.

That's why Hard Disk Sentinel is designed: to interpret the values properly (based on manufacturer, model, firmware) and report problems the best way for that model.

If you prefer, you may use the tests available in Hard Disk Sentinel
(see https://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests for more information)
just to confirm the status, to verify that the hard disk is really perfect - or to reveal any possible problems.

Also I'd recommend to use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option, as then I can check the complete status of this hard disk and verify if there are any problem with any of the self-monitoring attributes.

Thanks for the info and yes the drive is a seagate 2tb and the health and performance are both 100%. I will send a report for you to look at if you don't mine, there will be one drive in the report that is failing which is getting replaced this weekend.

Thanks,
Scott..
