how to compare two Hard drives performance?

Post by sat19 »

my asus laptop's hdd was making noise so I sent it for replacement to service centre but the new hdd seems slower.
old hdd:-Seagate ST1000LM035-1RK172 VS new one:-HTS541010A9E680
old had 128 mb cache and new one has only 8mb? which one is better?
I searched and found ST1000LM035-1RK172 has areal density:- 1 Tbit/sq.in. and internal data rate:- 100MBps whereas HTS541010A9E680 has 694 Gbit/sq.in. and internal data rate:-125MBps.
this terms are highly confusing and I am in a dilemma whether I should ask service Centre to give one equivalent to previous one.
please help.

If the old hard disk is no longer available, then it is hard to compare them for sure...

The cache speeds up transfers by holding the data temporarily in the internal memory of the disk drive.
Bigger cache is better - as the data read from the disk surface, stored in the cache and then provided from it when read by the computer, without accessing the disk surface itself. Especially useful when working with lots of small files, processing long directories (and during booting).
So the drive with 128 MB cache is definitely better than 8 MB.

Not sure why the service center used a completely different model, maybe there were too much problems/complaints about the ST1000LM035-1RK172 model.... You may ask them about the issue, it is possible that generally the new drive should work correctly but there was some issue with installation which resulted in slower performance.

Personally I'd attempt to use Disk menu -> Surface test -> Read test in Hard Disk Sentinel, as it designed not only to show the actual performance during verifying the complete data area (which is a longer, precise test, not just a quick speed test of a very small part of the drive) but also can reveal any problem, reason of slowness - which may really require replacement (again).

Hello,
Laptop drives are optimized for battery savings, not performance. Your new one is 5400 rpm. If you value performance see if you can't afford a ssd. It makes all the difference in the world to a laptop.

Agreed, SSD's are worth their weight in gold if it fits in your budget.

what I understand is that you need to compare the performance of the older hard drives which I believe are not SSD. Please update.
