Is my hard disk dying?

Post by kaahele »

Hi, both Hard Disk Sentinel and CrystalDiskInfo show my drive is 100% health but yesterday I received an alert from Hard Disk Sentinel that the drive is failing  . The S.M.A.R.T attributes looks OK (I think) but there are a few problems and alerts in the log. Should I be worry about the pending failure and RMA for a replacement or just monitor it a bit longer?

Thanks!

No, I can confirm that the hard disk is perfect, exactly as displayed in Hard Disk Sentinel.

I suspect that sometimes (in some rare situations) incorrect status arrived from the drive, which could trigger the problems and logged.
This can happen if
- there is an issue with the communication channel (for example cables / connections) but now I see no traces of communication errors
- there is an issue with the controller / driver of the controller where the hard disk connected.
This is common (for example) with some Intel chipset driver versions, for example 10.8, 11.0, 11.2.
- there is an other problem with the system which may cause unstable operation environment. RAM problem, general (CPU/chipset) overheat, CPU overclocking and so.

Hard Disk Sentinel has numerous filters against such incorrect status information (which may happen with various situations, controllers, USB enclosures, etc...) and it's always improved in new versions.
Please use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option, as then it is possible to check the actual situation, verify the controller, driver, "raw" information detected about the drive - and this may help to improve such filters - and also to warn about possible issues.

Also personally I'd try the tests of Hard Disk Sentinel, exactly to
- confirm if the status is perfect, there are no problems
or
- to reveal any kind of problems
Please check http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests for more information about the recommended hard disk tests.

Thanks for the explanation! I ran the following test for the past few days and found no problems.

1) Disk -> Short self test
2) Disk -> Extended self test
3) Disk -> Surface test -> Read test
4) Disk -> Surface test -> Read + WRITE + read test (refresh data area)

I think it might be just a little glitch. This is one of the four identical HD in my Mediasonic 3.5" Hard Drive Enclosure. No problem at all with the other drives so the controller itself should be OK.

Thanks again for the help!

The most important is that now things are fine and the tests confirmed that there are no problems.

I suspect the problem could be related to the chip in the enclosure. In some rare situations, yes, this may provide incorrect status information when accessed.
Can you please let me know the Mediasonic enclosure model and the connection used (USB, eSATA)?
This way it would be possible to check it with more details, investigate any possible troubles.

Anyway, if you use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option, it may help to check the status response received from the enclosure.
And maybe if you see such issue again, a new report can help to verify the changes in the reported status.

Hi, it's Mediasonic ProBox HF2-SU3S2 4 Bay. I am using the USB 3.0 connection.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info, will investigate such with more details.

Also if you experience different status information reported, please try to use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option as soon as possible, so it is possible to examine the response got from the enclosure.
Thanks!
