Hi,
I've got an Samsung SDD 840 EVO 1TB.
It's health has been going down steadily. It is now 93% after 188 days.
Somehow lifetime writes is 162.59TB !
I use TaskInfo to have a look at who has been writing to the hard disk and HDSentinel.exe has 130,787,366 Kb of writes.
Next is Search Indexer - 48,314,962
NetWrox - 13,974,957
Crashplan - 9,770,126
Uptime is 1 day 18 hours.
Why does HDSentinel have so many writes? Is there any way to reduce it?

Re: High Disk write from HD Sentinel?
Hi,
I can confirm that Hard Disk Sentinel DOES NOT write so high amount of data.
Hard Disk Sentinel constantly monitors the total amount of read/written data by Windows Performance Monitoring objects and displays the current transfer rates, total amount of data reads/writes, daily average reads/writes and so on the "Performance" page.
Because of monitoring the change of such objects, reads and writes (caused by ANY other applications and Windows itself) are counted - and reflected (incorrectly) in the task manager.
You can easily verify this: for a quick test, you may disable monitoring the real-time performance this way:
1) completely close Hard Disk Sentinel by File -> Exit
2) start REGEDIT and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\HD Sentinel
or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HD Sentinel if you have 32 bit Windows.
3) create a new string value (REG_SZ) under this key, called
DetectPerf
and please specify its value to 0
4) After restart of Hard Disk Sentinel it should not access the performance counters at all, so the "Performance" tab should show no performance information - but then the high amount of data (which not really written by Hard Disk Sentinel) will be also not displayed and you can monitor the real amount of data written (very minimal, only related to periodic update of hard disk statistics).
And then you may delete the created DetectPerf key to restore functionality to normal.

Re: High Disk write from HD Sentinel?
Hi,
Thanks for that.
I've just had a look using TaskInfo (by Iarsn) again.
Uptime is 1 day 53 minutes. Top writers are
NetWrox - 10,896,479
Crashplan - 6,642,502
Google Chrome - 2,536,619
HD Sentinel is down at 1,204
How strange!
Thanks for the reply. I will keep an eye on things and try your tip is HD Sentinal appears to writing a lot again.
Thanks
