I like to use HDS to monitor my drives. It sends alerts if it detects something wrong with a drive, even if it's in an array.
Well, when I go to write test any drive in pass-through (JBOD) configuration, using the drive test feature controlled by a plugin card, Raid or HBA controller for example, the drive speed is only 33-45MB/s. Connected to a standard motherboard controller, Intel or AMD, the drives write test at their maximum speed. 160-200MB/s.
This has been tested by me using LSI, Dell, IBM, Adaptec, and Areca cards (HDS hates areca cards by the way. I have HDS developers looking into this).
All different firmware versions including IT and IR versions.
I'm running Win7 x64 Home Premium on one Intel Z97 platform and one AMD 990FX platform. Single drive or array member, the results are the same.
I'm using Registered HDS v4.50 (6845)
I just can't believe the software is at fault, it's been around too long. So maybe I'm using the program wrong or I have some Win7 setting wrong.
Anyone with experience with this?

Re: Using HDS with plugin boards
Personally I did not experience such difference. Not sure, but it may be related to the actual driver version or just an incompatibility between the card(s) and the actual hard disk model.
I just had the opportunity to perform a quick test with a simple 80 GB HDD and Adaptec 7805 card and I see no absolutely no problems, no slowness.
Write speed over the complete surface:
For reference, read speed over the complete surface:
As you can see, the write speed is same, as high as the read speed itself.
The hard disk is in pass through mode, NOT configured (this is why the controller does not provide access to S.M.A.R.T. information this way, so the temperature information is missing, as you can see).
This is with Adaptec 7805 controller.
Will try different controllers / hard disks also in the following days. Also I'm so curious to hear other experiences, results as well from other users.
Thanks!
