There are many RAID controllers supported and disk information detected when the disks are in RAID configuration.
For example on NVidia, Silicon Image controllers (just the simpler ones) and LSI / HighPoint / Areca / 3ware / AMCC.
These are listed in the "RAID Controllers" section at the top of http://www.hdsentinel.com/compatibility ... ollers.php

Just make sure to use proper (recent) driver versions ;)

Checking updates from time to time won't actually hurt, right?

Be careful - not always the latest driver is the best.
On Support -> Driver Zone page the tested and verified drivers listed. Some controllers (eg. Marvell, Intel) may have different/updated drivers - but they are worse.
