Thanks for the detailed explanation - I'm still rather concerned but if the manufacturers decide to reset a particular statistic on power-cycle, they presumably don't consider it important. Did a bit of experimenting (after taking another backup). With the 9260-8i, it isn't possible to "de-RAID" disks as such, any that aren't part of a RAID array just aren't available (they don't show up under Disk Management, etc). I did manage to create a RAID-0 array with just one disk tho...

Maybe you can try a Disk menu -> Surface test -> Read test. This will probably show a warning that the drive can't be locked for exclusive use (which is normal, because of the running OS and apps) but you can still continue to proceed.
