Re: StoreCtrl.dll scanning 256 physical disk drives
Hmm...looks like there is some variation here. Did a check on another system (with only one disk) and (a) the scanning is done by HDSentinel.exe and (b) it is limited to a mere 99 drives...

StoreCtrl.dll scanning 256 physical disk drives
As part of my security setup I run System Safety Monitor (http://web.archive.org/web/20080919100508/http://www.syssafety.com/default.html), which controls what applications can run and what they can do. One of the actions that can be controlled is low-level disk access which should only legitimately...

Re: Dark mode/theme
Using standard (aka "classic") Windows themes works quite well - mostly. However the panels listing individual drives and partitions (and the graph background) remain the same shade of grey (see screenshots) so having these use standard system colours (or just a slightly lighter shade of t...

Re: Question hdd no read/no write position heads
See "Inching toward the NAS of our dreams" at http://dansdata.com/gz060.htm for more details about drive spindown - it varies by enclosure so you either have to check for yourself, or ask the manufacturer.

Re: Inconsistent Soft Error SMART reports
Thanks for the detailed explanation - I'm still rather concerned but if the manufacturers decide to reset a particular statistic on power-cycle, they presumably don't consider it important. This information though would seem well worth adding to the help page at https://www.hdsentinel.com/help/en/12...

Re: Disk read test failing - breaking RAID array
Hm... From the report file you sent I see (line 1229): PCI\VEN_1000&DEV_0079&SUBSYS_92611000&REV_05\4&9784C61&0&0048 4.27.1.32 6-11-2010 LSI MegaRAID SAS 9260-8i That's why I tried with 4.27.1.32 driver Whoops - I had done the test (and report) using a backup install which h...

Re: Disk read test failing - breaking RAID array
Thanks for the follow-up. ...I installed this under Windows XP SP 3 and installed 100% same driver what you use: version 4.27.1.32 (date: 6-11-2010). According the developer report, this is what you have installed too. Sorry, but the driver version I have installed is, as noted above, 4.32.0.32 whic...

Apologies for the thread necromancy, but Seagate do now have a product information page listing which of their drives use SMR and CMR - see:

Re: Disk read test failing - breaking RAID array
Did a bit of experimenting (after taking another backup). With the 9260-8i, it isn't possible to "de-RAID" disks as such, any that aren't part of a RAID array just aren't available (they don't show up under Disk Management, etc). I did manage to create a RAID-0 array with just one disk tho...

Re: Eject HDD in Windows 10 doubt
These above two mentioned models manufactured in 2013 have autoparking when the 2.5" HDD + enclosure case is ejected from Windows? I believe that park technology has received updates since the 90s and I think that the first ones parked only when 100% power supply was cut Every disk since the 1...

Re: Disk read test failing - breaking RAID array
I tried again, disabling the Lock Drive option and received similar results (new screenshot attached). The driver used by the RAID card is version 4.32.0.32 of megasas.sys, dated 17/9/2010 - not a spring chicken but the latest version I could find with WinXP support. In terms of controller SSD suppo...

Disk read test failing - breaking RAID array
I tried running HDSentinel's Disk Surface (Read) test on a Samsung 470 series SSD which was part of a RAID-0 array controlled by an LSI (now Avago/Broadcom) MegaRAID 9260-8i. The read tests failed (even when Windows was started from a separate hard disk) and MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) reported t...

Re: Test Failed By Electrical Element
Quick update - repeated the read test while running from my backup partition (so nothing was using the disks under test) and encountered the same problem (failed tests and the drive taken offline from the RAID array). Since this issue now seems different from the original problem, I'll be creating a...

Re: Test Failed By Electrical Element
Maybe you can try a Disk menu -> Surface test -> Read test. This will probably show a warning that the drive can't be locked for exclusive use (which is normal, because of the running OS and apps) but you can still continue to proceed. This will test the data area of both drives (as they are in RAI...
