Hard Disk Monitoring

Hi there, just wondering if I could get some specifics on what exactly the disk repair function does when it runs into a bad sector? I have read the help page on it, but it doesn't go into the gory details. For sectors that are unallocated, I assume it just overwrites the sector. But what does it do...
