Re: What do I make of this "Raw Read Error Rate" situation?
Okay, I've sent the report. I'm not sure how I completely forgot to mention the kind of drive it is, it totally slipped my mind for some reason; it's a 2TB Western Digital Easystore. Powered via USB cable. The Raw Read Error Rate is around 42, last I checked. Like I said, it tends to fluctuate for s...

What do I make of this "Raw Read Error Rate" situation?
Upon connecting one of my external drives to my computer, I noticed an increase in the "Raw Read Error Rate" section of the S.M.A.R.T. readings; an increase of 15, to be exact. I decided to run a surface test (read) to see if there's a bigger problem with my drive and after a while the &qu...

Re: Power off retract cycle count
I see, that might actually explain the difference as I've never had this problem with my 2TB drives. Do you think it's okay to plug my 2TB drives into my front USB ports, though? Because I can understand 5TB maybe being a bit much, but would 2TB demand less? I've never really had an issue with those...

Re: Power off retract cycle count
Okay, I've sent the report. Hopefully that will help narrow down the issue. The whole thing is so weird; like I said, I haven't had a problem again and I've used the same drive to see if I can replicate the issue. I've even used the same USB cable on different drives to see if that's the problem, an...

Power off retract cycle count
Hello, Last night the "power off retract cycle count" increased to 1 for one of my WD external drives, despite the fact that I've always ejected/disconnected the drive properly and cannot think of a single reason for this count to increase. What's even stranger though, is that shortly afte...

Re: Wondering about temperatures during surface test
Yeah, it only reaches 49°C or so during tests, and that's only for a period of 2½ hours. Like I said, I've only run the surface test about 5 or 6 times, over a period of a few months. So unless I'm totally wrong, 49°C for 2½ hours less than a dozen times does not sound TOO intensive. I will definite...

Wondering about temperatures during surface test
Hello, I routinely run the surface test on my 2TB external drives to double-check that everything's okay, and it's quite common for my drives to hit temperatures around 49°C while the test is running. My drives are more than 50% full, so the test can sometimes take almost 4 hours to finish...and for...

Re: Question about dark green squares during Surface Test
Okay, I would just like to show you my latest read results so that I can get your input. As you can hopefully see, there are some sections that are slightly darker than others, and clumped together. Is this the sort of thing that can get worse with time? Or am I just worrying about nothing? Are a fe...

Question about dark green squares during Surface Test
Hello, I regularly run the Surface Test (Read) on my external WD drives to make sure that they're doing fine, and I've noticed that all four of them show little dark green squares here and there. There doesn't seem to be a lot of them, just a few in some spots, but I was wondering if that's the sort...

Re: Extended self-test for external 1TB WD Elements drive st
Thanks so much for the quick reply. I've just finished the surface test and everything seems fine: green across the board. Is it safe to assume that between the surface test and the Data Lifeguard test that the external drive is okay? Because both tests say everything's fine. Should I run any additi...

Extended self-test for external 1TB WD Elements drive stuck
Hello. I seem to be having a problem completing the extended self-test for a brand new external 1TB WD elements drive. The test got as far as "estimated time remaining 1 minute" and just stayed there for nearly 20 hours before I stopped it. I'm not quite sure what the problem is, the exten...
