Current Pending Sector Count 65535
Hi Janos, I'm having some troubles with a WD green drive (WD20EACS - 2TB). First sign of failure were accumulating raw read errors so I bought a new hdd and copied the data over (like usual with ddrescue). Over time current pending sector count started to increase and offline uncorrectable sector co...

Re: Error 1117 without any SMART problems at all
HDDs are all 2TB disks in this case.
Accessible sectors were up to block 5496 (sector 2'147'483'647 with manual reading or sector 2'147'483'087 according to first read scan error)
Report and test should follow in a couple of days when I can devote more time again.

Re: Best procedure if damaged sectors are found with error 1117?
Yes. But as I remember, _originally_, when the delays / fluctuations first reported, the drive was connected to a different power supply. And this is exactly why I wrote that now, after the power source changed and more stable, then you'll experience better results. Hmm... maybe by reading and read...

Re: Error 1117 without any SMART problems at all
Hi Janos, Thanks a lot for your reply and your thoughts about it. :) In the meantime I pushed my investigations further and I found the explanation for the whole story: the problem was linked with a BIOS setting I (stupidly) changed thinking it would improve the performance... It was some 32 bit tra...

Error 1117 without any SMART problems at all
Hi Janos, I would like to start this new thread which actually is somewhat connected to my former one about this same error, but it's another HDD this time so I think it's better to separate them. :) The concerned HDD is brand new (and thoroughly tested before starting to use it). There is not probl...

Re: Best procedure if damaged sectors are found with error 1117?
So here I am again, sorry for the delay in my answer. :) When the drive processed (even with the read test) and the power source is now stable, it could better, faster read the contents stored in the underlying sectors. This is why you now get better results: slightly faster areas and sectors read w...

Re: Best procedure if damages sectors are found with error 1117?
I just wanted to add the next part of the story for anybody facing the same type of hdd failure like I did. First let me quote some information of the ddrescue presentation from here: http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/manual/ddrescue_manual.html#Logfile-structure GNU ddrescue is not a derivative ...

Re: SMART Power Off Retract Count and Load Cycle Count
Thanks for this other nice hint! :D Actually what I don't understand with these external USB Elements HDD is that they seem never to spin down (sleep), even when not accessed for a longer time (I suppose but hard to know exactly what the various apps are doing in the background). Then strangely they...

Re: Best procedure if damages sectors are found with error 1117?
The list of attributes (especially if copied from a different tool) is not really useful to determine the problems and the real situation. Alternatively, in Hard Disk Sentinel you may use right click -> Copy entire page to clipboard on the S.M.A.R.T. page to copy everything to the clipboard and pas...

Best procedure if damaged sectors are found with error 1117?
Hi, Starting this new thread because I would be glad to have your expert opinion about this problem. :) This HDD is a WD green drive actually coming from a MyBook enclosure which I had to crack open a couple of days ago. In the history of this MyBook which originally had a USB + eSata + Firewire int...

Re: SMART Power Off Retract Count and Load Cycle Count
The LLC = 6 seems a bit high for me for a completely new hard disk and also the power retract is usually zero according the experiences but the values you mentioned are still acceptable, depending on the drive. Since it's a WD green drive they are notorious for having this (crazy) setting of 8 seco...

Re: SMART Power Off Retract Count and Load Cycle Count
Hi, I just wanted to confirm what you stated above. On some new disks (in this case a WD green 2TB, factory sealed) the SMART attributes may be other then zero. I just had a case with a start / stop count of 2, power cycle of 2, power retract of 1 and LLC of 6. So obviously some brands are already s...

Yes good idea to also look at the sector level.
Thanks again!

Re: SMART Power Off Retract Count and Load Cycle Count
Thank you very much for your reply and advises. Actually it's the SMART status of a WD Red 2TB HDD. Some drives like you said may have non zero values already when just opened from the sealed anti-static bag. I did not verify this by myself since in the past I was not going so deep in SMART queries ...

SMART Power Off Retract Count and Load Cycle Count
Hi, I just received my new (?) HDD in an open antistatic bag with following SMART attributes: ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 100 253 051 Pre-fail Always - 0 3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0027 100 253 021 Pre-fail Always - 0 4 Start_Stop_...
